@ anonymouswhy yes thank you I do, a nice B.S. of Chemical Engineering, and two years of Mechanical Engineering before I switched. Most buildings are designed with a nice strength pad 10-20% over weight load to account for wind, snow, ice, anythign that could stress the metal more. Nice steel buildings like the WTC are made of high strength forged steel columns, forging metals causes their strength to increase but also their brittleness to grow, application of controlled heat relaxes the stress slightly leaving incresed strength but less brittleness, application of higher heats relaxes the metal more, causing increasingly greater losses in strength/weight-bearing capacity. Considering how fast the temperature v. strength curve drops on regular steel around the temps of burning jet fuel a 10-20% drop in strength is easy, causing a massive rapid failure and once one beam goes its load shifts to the others and its game over. Bring your list on, even a fresh out of college engineer can disprove em as long as they stick to facts and figures and not conjecture and conspiracy. apologies to the rest of the blog, I’m done for the day, time to get back to running the plant! 😀

@Matthew:Please explain then why the WTC are the only modern sky-scraper of that design to ever come crashing down in a fire. Other skyscrapers of similar design have burned for much longer – to the point that every material in the building would burn to a crisp and yet the metal frame is still standing fine without a hitch.
